The Un-"Fairness" Doctrine
It is interesting that discussion of reviving the so-called Fairness Doctrine percolates to the surface every so often. Here is yet another article on this particular issue. I am certainly not a Constitutional Law expert, familiar with every nuance of our freedom of speech rights, but it seems obvious to me that this is a blatant violation of the First Amendment. Clearly it is an attempt to stifle the outrageous success of conservative talk radio; however, would it then require talk show hosts to allow equal time to both outspoken liberal and conservative celebrities if they choose to bring up politics, like they so often do? The reality is, both liberals and conservatives have various ways to get their messages across to voters, we shouldn't allow the government to attempt to stifle the ones they disagree with.
