While health care reform and cap-and-trade are at the top of Obama’s to-do list, he still finds time to throw American tax dollars at other problems.
For example, consider his proposed $12-billion plan to produce 5 million more community college graduates (nationwide) by 2020. It’s easy to become desensitized to the word “billion” lately, but in case we’ve forgotten, that’s whole a lot of money.
No one’s complaining about graduating more students – that’s an admirable goal. But education reform is not just a bunch of statistics. We need quality, not just quantity. We need to allow for creativity and choice in education, not a one-size-fits-all prescription of more money.
As Frederick M. Hess tells us in his analysis at the Daily News, America needs to look seriously at education reform, rather than simply subsidizing the status quo.
