The Best College Degrees for a Return on Investment

Vicki E. Alger

It’s not all doom and gloom for prospective college graduates. Accompanying its list of the worst college degrees in terms of getting a return on your investment, Salary.com just published its list of degrees that actually may help you earn your college money back.

The annual salaries in fields related to #8 math really add up, ranging from $70,000 up to nearly $150,000, depending on the career. Fields related to #7 information technology (IT) degrees also approach and exceed the six-figure salary mark.

Coming in just under $100,000 for related career salaries is #6 human resources, #4 biology,  #3 engineering, and #2 marketing. Bouncing way back up and over is #5 economics, with related career salaries approaching $150,000.

The #1 Salary.com degree in terms of earning your college money back actually took me by surprise: Englishyes English. Speechwriters, communications managers, and web content managers earn average annual salaries between $80,000 and $90,000.

I guess writing a thesis on Shakespeare wasn’t so silly after all! Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go talk to human resources…
