LISTEN: Vicki Alger on Education Choice Reforms in 2019

All parents want the best for their children. Educational opportunities are often integral to the long-term happiness and prosperity of children. Yet for too long, there has been an unfair disparity between what educational choices are available to high-income students and low-income students in our public education system.

That’s not right. Every family deserves maximum flexibility and freedom in education.

The best way to do this is to give parents more control over their children’s education. When it comes to their children, parents are the best experts and know what’s best for them.

IWF Senior Fellow Vicki Alger, who frequently writes about the need to reform our education system so that it works for students and families, recently joined The Heartland Institute to discuss reform ideas for 2019 to expand choice in education. Vicki talks about the vital role parents play in education and explains the benefits of school choice programs, including vouchers, education savings accounts, tax credit scholarships and child safety accounts.

This year’s National School Choice Week is coming up January 20-26th. School choice is by far the best way to help underprivileged students. It’s also true that everyone wins when there is more access to a broad array of programs that offer more choice and freedom. As Senior Policy Analyst Inez Stepman put it in an IWF policy paper on School Choice, “Educational freedom isn’t suited only for a subset of children. It’s best for all.”
