A Star Is Born: Fabiana Rosales, Wife of Venezuelan Opposition Leader

by Charlotte Hays

Fabiana Rosales, wife of Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido, is emerging as a "potent force" in her husband's campaign to replace socialist autocrat Nicolas Maduro, according to the AP.

Juan Guaido was declared interim president of Venezuela after Maduro, whose policies have led to chaos and starvation, was elected in sham voting.

She is a globe-trotting 26 year old, whose youth and informal dress (she loves jeans) "belie an inner toughness and maturity cultivated with her activist husband during violent street protests in Venezuela’s capital."

The AP reports on her emergence:

"Look, I am the wife of President Juan Guaido and I will accompany him on whatever route he takes and we will overcome whatever obstacles we face as we have done through all our years together,” Rosales said during an interview in Peru’s capital of Lima. “But I got involved in politics because I want to change my country.”

"I don’t want my daughter to grow up wanting to leave Venezuela,” she said, a reference to the roughly 3 million Venezuelans who have fled their country amid a collapsing economy, hyperinflation and shortages of food and medicines, and now blackouts .

Rosales and Guaido met at rally sponsored by Voluntad Popular, an opposition party.

Rosales was in Washington yesterday to talk to President Trump, who was obviously impressed.

“She’s been through what people don’t want to have to go through and should never have to go through.”

Interesting--and brave--woman--we hope to hear more of her.

But that will depend on what happens in Venezuela (where Cuba is heavily involved and Russia has sent military aid).
