Confronting the Hookup Culture

Robert George and John Londregan of Princeton University call for university support (in the same vein of a women's resource center or LGBT center) for students who reject the hookup culture.  I'm not convinced that their idea of campus centers is a particuarly effective route to take, but hey -- it's nice to see people thinking outside the box on the issue.

I am so, so, so tired of the pervasive assumption that women can't have sex for it's own sake. Sometimes sex really is just sex, and nobody even has to coo or cuddle or cry themselves to sleep afterwards. Really.

Women should be supported in their natural instinct to resist uncommitted sex. Many forces in American culture try to make women think there are no differences between male and female, that sexual intercourse should be just like scratching an itch. But that's a lie. Actually, it should be part of a committed relationship for both male and female, but women especially have more to lose. Condoms break; sometimes condoms can't protect against certain STDs; and you just lose part of yourself when you give it away to the nearest "taker."
