(OneNewsNow) - A San Diego TV station is reporting that Mayor Bob Filner has agreed to resign as a means of settling a sexual harassment lawsuit. Sabrina Schaeffer, executive director of the Independent Women's Forum, says it would be “an appropriate response” for Filner to leave office.
"The fact is, it's one thing to be sending inappropriate tweets or to say something, but these are real actions,” she tells OneNewsNow. “Not to see some kind of consequences to a man who has actively [and] inappropriately touched women on his staff would be surprising."
Schaeffer adds that she is hopeful this will put other elected representatives on notice.
"And I hope it tells lawmakers that while the media may not focus a lot on their mistreatment of women, the fact is that voters do want their representatives to be people of upstanding character and morality – and that this is concerning if people are really turning a blind eye to this kind of behavior,” she comments.
“So I feel sort of satisfied that this has happened, and I think it's important that other lawmakers take it seriously."
