British journalist Robert Fisk can’t be accused of lacking empathy. Attacked by thieving thugs on the Afghan-Pakistan border — young men broke my glasses, began smashing stones into my face and head. I couldn’t see for the blood pouring down my forehead and swamping my eyes — he instantly forgave his tormenters. Why?

Because he “understood” their motivation.  I couldn’t blame them for what they were doing. In fact, if I were Afghan refugees…I would have done just the same to Robert Fisk. Or any other Westerner I could find.  The feckless Fisk even described his assailants as “truly innocent of any crime except being the victim of the world” — a global version of the twinkie defense.
