Agree with their politics or not, but People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have been working on some clever capitalist publicity stunts to spread their gospel of ethical animal treatment.

According to Reuters, the German city of Hamburg was recently offered $10,500 worth of vegetarian burgers by PETA to change its name to “Veggieburg.” “Hamburg could promote animal welfare and court sympathy for animals by changing its name to Veggieburg,” PETA wrote in a letter sent to Hamburg Mayor Ole von Beust on Monday.”

Mayor von Beust was not moved. “I cannot afford to waste my time with this. I don’t even want to look at nonsense like this…but that doesn’t mean we Hamburgers don’t have a sense of humor.”

Meanwhile, PETA got just what it needed: free press and a few chuckles. Well done!
