Cultural inclusiveness is one thing, but this story from the AP wire takes things to an entirely new level. When a Portland, Oregon area hospital needed translators for all the languages its clients speak, professionals in the mental health ward had a special request: a translator fluent in Klingon.

Aye aye, Captain. The faux language invented for Star Trek has blossomed into a coherent syntax, grammar, and entire system of communication. And some Portland area mental patients seem to enjoy communicating in Klingon alone. That leaves administrators in a legal pinch when they need to communicate information about treatment to the Vulcan-loving patients.

Luckily, within a few days the hospital decided against spending its funds on a Klingon translator — but it’s telling that they had to consider such a hiring a valid possibility.
