Five-term Rep. Karen McCarthy (D-Mo.) has just returned to Congress from a month-long stint at an alcohol rehab clinic. She brings with her the Serenity Prayer.

According to the congressional daily, The Hill, McCarthy requires her staff, reluctant though they may be, to stand in a circle and recite the Serenity Prayer along with her. Taken from the 12-step Alcoholics Anonymous program, the 94-word prayer begins: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

Apparently, the prayer vigil is just one of the many innovations McCarthy has inflicted on her staff. Reportedly, she has viciously berated some of her aides, reducing them to tears. And during her stay at the rehab clinic, McCarthy repeatedly called her office and blamed staffers for her drinking problem.

God grant McCarthy’s staff that they have the courage to quit. And God grant Missouri citizens a new representative in the coming elections.
