Girls! It’s not too late to sign up for Ms. Magazine’s post-election Bahamas cruise!
The dates are Nov. 13-20, 2004. For as little as $923 (to share a four-bunk inside cabin, no portholes), you will be treated to a full week of top feminista leaders gabbing about patriarchy, white male oppressors, and evil Republicans. Besides some of Ms.’s editors along for the free trip (in the first-class cabins, I’ll bet, not below deck with the four-bunk proles), your intrepid fellow travelers will include: Martha Burk of the National Council of Women’s Organizations (she’s the one who tried to stage a nationwide revolt against the men-only membership policy of the Augusta Golf Club but managed to round up only 40 picketers); Kim Gandy, president of the National Organization for Women; Eleanor Smeal of Feminist Majority; and Carol Moseley-Braun, the former Democratic senator (and African dictator-fancier) from Illinois who made a brief stab at running for president this year although she hadn’t held elected office since she lost her Senate seat in 1998. In addition Dolores Huerta, president of the United Farm Workers, will take a break from the grape harvest to board the Caribbean-bound love boat. What an all-star group! Expect all five to be either elated or in the dumps by post-election November.
Cruise events will include “feminist land excursions,” small-group sessions on “feminist socially responsible investing,” and writing workshops (where, presumably, you’ll learn how to churn out your own man-hating screed).
So dust off your Birkenstocks and bathing suit (but not your jug of Gallo wine, because the United Farm Workers are boycotting that one) and head for the boat!
