The Senate has confirmed the nomination of Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court by a vote of 58-42. (One Republican, Lincoln Chafee voted against Alito; Democrat Mary Landrieu, whose decision was one of the Democratic votes observers awaited eagerly, also voted no.) As the New York Times notes, this is a “triumph” for the Bush presidency.

The left is hysterical: Note the bizarre press release last night from those genius political strategists at the National Organization for Women. Here’s an entry from the Washington Post Supreme Court blog: “Mothers, protect you [six] 10 year old girls from strip search Sammy.” Actually, this only applies if you are a mother who sells illegal substances and plans to store your product in and about your ten-year-old daughter’s person.

Many of us who don’t sell heroin and have long yearned for the Supreme Court to get out of the business of legislating are quite pleased.
