According to the BBC, British cops are dispatching extra officers during the world cup because they think there will be a surge in domestic violence calls due to “heightened emotions and increase in alcohol consumption during the World Cup.”
Now, I don’t have access to British crime numbers and such, so I have no idea if their suspicion is true or not. Only time will tell for sure. But I can’t help but be reminded of a similar claim American feminists made back in 1993. In 1993, feminists alleged that domestic violence rose dramatically on Super Bowl Sunday. NBC even aired a public service announcement on domestic violence during the game. Turns out it was completely false. Christina Hoff Sommers looked at the numbers and proved the feminists wrong in her book, Who Stole Feminism?
