A mere seven months after the program began, Hawaii has dropped its universal healthcare program for children called Keiki Care. The program was intended to cover uninsured children from birth until they turn eighteen. However, state leaders were surprised that parents were dropping health insurance coverage for their children that they were currently paying for and enrolling their children in the free state program.
“People who were already able to afford health care began to stop paying for it so they could get it for free,” said Dr. Kenny Fink, the administrator for Med-QUEST at the Department of Human Services. “I don’t believe that was the intent of the program.”
