Many people (myself included) have written about how President Obama is exercising school choice by sending his daughters to Sidwell Friends, even as he considers killing the federal program that is helping poor D.C. parents do they same.
Fewer people recognize that there is another reason why President Obama should appreciate school choice — he himself used a scholarship to attend a prestigious private school in Hawaii. Heritage’s Dan Lips (full disclosure, he is also my brother) has this piece up that highlights the important role that this opportunity had in shaping President Obama’s future. As Dan notes, President Obama has expressed gratitude for this opportunity.
