Yesterday marked the 40th day since the murder of Iranian music student Neda Agha Soltan at a post-election demonstration in Tehran. Thousands of Iranians went to the Behesht Zahra cemetary to pay thier respects.
There, mourners were met by security officials who tried to break up the ceremony. And as one witness reports, women again showed courage in defying the crackdown:
“While police tried to disperse the crowds initially, there were not many clashes. Women – mostly older mothers – managed to create a human chain between mourners and the police, who seemed to be charged with maintaining order during the ceremony.”
