This report from LinkTV speaks volumes about the still dismal state of women in Afghanistan.  Even though they can now vote and even run for office, Afghan women are still considered second class citizens.

Reports LinkTV:

“Domestic violence is entrenched in society, the majority of women in Afghanistan are illiterate, and nearly half are married off while still children, under 16. Shocking numbers of Afghan women set themselves on fire, a fact that is underreported by Western media and may well signal their desperation.”

In March this year, a new law was believed to contain articles that ruled that women could not leave their homes without their husband’s permission and that they could not refuse their husbands sex.

Will yesterday’s election really help Afghan women where it matters? It still remains to be seen.
