The Christian Science Monitor has a story on the King Abdullah Science and Technology University (KAUST)–the first ever fully coed university to open in Saudi Arabia.  The mingling of men and women in the same classroom is quite progressive for this country but it doesn’t stop there.  Women will also be allowed to unveil and to drive.  The paper reports that “the inauguration of KAUST is meant to signal two important developments: a lauded, if politically volatile, softening of hard-line rules, and the kingdom’s rising ambitions of being a hub of scientific learning. Both aims, Saudi Arabia’s rulers hope, will help blunt the impact of extremism.”
