President Obama would be unwise to focus on the Tea Party movement for two reasons:
First, it underscores the fact that the White House and their Democratic colleagues in Congress cannot run on their legislative accomplishments. The health care overhaul, for instance, continues to be overwhelmingly rejected by the American public.
Second, national parties – Republican or Democrat – should not thumb their nose at the will of the American voter. By lambasting the Tea Party movement and suggesting it is somehow out of the mainstream, the White House looks – yet again – like it is out of touch with the values of the American public. Instead of trying to induce fear, and scorning the values of the American public, they ought to consider the strong support among voters for a return to constitutionally limited government.
