The AP reports that Iran president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad described the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) as “dictators” for instituting a headscarf ban for women’s soccer. On Friday, the Iranian team forfeited to Jordan on what would have been a 2012 Olympic qualifier game because the team wouldn’t play without the hijabs.
Ahmadinejad said at a news conference “These are the dictators and colonialists who want to impose their lifestyle on others,” and that “We follow definite rights of our girls.” Iran’s ambassador to Jordan, said the ban was “inhumane” and “politically motivated” and called FIFA’s ban “extremism.”
Oh, those funny guys in Iran. They make me laugh.
Now, why are they mad at FIFA? Oh yeah, because FIFA bans head coverings–the very head coverings that Iran requires women to wear.
As usual, dimwitted Ahmadinejad doesn’t seem to grasp the perfect irony of his criticism of FIFA–calling the soccer federation dictatorial for “imposing their lifestyle” on others when he dictates the lifestyle choices of millions of Iranian women by requiring them to cover.
I’m sure the United Nations will soon weigh in on this…on Iran’s side, of course.
