Here’s how ugly the American Left has become: The online magazine Salon has just published a story headlined:
Let’s Hope the Boston Marathon Bomber is a White American
Let’s just hope that, regardless of ethnicity and nationality of this monster, the authorities nab this monster before the end of this terrible week.
The Salon story was written by David Sirota. Sirota begins:
As we now move into the official Political Aftermath period of the Boston bombing — the period that will determine the long-term legislative fallout of the atrocity — the dynamics of privilege will undoubtedly influence the nation’s collective reaction to the attacks. That’s because privilege tends to determine: 1) which groups are — and are not — collectively denigrated or targeted for the unlawful actions of individuals; and 2) how big and politically game-changing the overall reaction ends up being.
The dynamics of privilege?
All most of us care about, Mr. Sirota, are the dynamics of justice and the dynamics of protecting other Americans from such atrocities.
While you are fantacising about the race of the bomber, most of us find ourselves unable to stop thinking about Boston's stricken Richard family and other families affected by this utter horror.
I find it sick that anybody would sit around and fantasize and hope that it will be better if the bomber is white. By the way, I would also find it sick if somebody is sitting around and hoping that the bomber is a foreign-born jihadi.
Sirota gives as his rationale for dreaming of a white bomber that U.S. citizens such as Timothy McVeigh who commit acts of atrocities are generally regarded as lone wolves, while Islamists are seen as existential threats. News Flash, Mr. Sirota: Foreign-born jihadis who hate America are existential threats—and so are American mass killers such as McVeigh.
I suspect that Mr. Sirota hopes that the bomber, when he is found, will be white so that Sirota and his ilk can smear some group they don’t like. Possibly a white bomber could be tied, even if only very tenuously, to–oh, let your imagination figure out just what kind of white bomber would fulfill Mr. Sirota's requirement.
In any event, we have no control over this. The terrible act has taken place. We know only that the bomber is evil but surely we will soon know the identify.
Speaking only for myself, I agree with Boston Herald columnist Howie Carr that the only right punishment for whoever did this is the death penalty.
But this will not be possible because Massachusetts–unfortunately, in my view–doesn't have the death penalty and you can’t pass laws ex post facto.
I am far more interested in finding out who did this than I am pining it on some group, Mr. Sirota.
