Congratulations to Caitlyn Jenner for her bravery in finally coming out after all these years as…a Republican.

Only hours after the 65-year-old swimsuit model formerly known as Bruce Jenner publicly announced her name change on the cover of Vanity Fair, she received a Twitter taunt from Tennessee Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen:

Bruce #Jenner came out as a Republican last April. Well is #CaitlynJenner a Republican too?

I'm sorry, but that's conserva-phobic! Fortunately, the mainstream media, once again demonstrating its concern for oppressed minorities, leaped to Jenner's defense. Scott Sutton of the Chicago Sun-Times tut-tutted:

Reactions to the public reveal of Caitlyn Jenner on the cover of Vantiy Fair’s June 9th issue (she was known publicly as Bruce until Monday) have been swift and mostly encouraging.

I say “mostly” because, of course, there are people like Rep. Steve Cohen who apparently don’t know what gender reassignment is.

Other Twitter users agreed that we need to stop saying "LGBT" and start saying "LGBTGOP." Some sample tweets:

She completed gender reassignment surgery, she wasn't lobotomized. I imagine she continues to support free markets and liberty.

When "tolerant" liberals literally can't wrap their heads around the fact someone can be trans AND republican

Sutton concluded:

As you can see, Twitter was riled up about the comment, and rightfully so. It’s hard to imagine that Rep. Cohen — whose Twitter bio ironically says “Supporter of civil rights/liberties/women&minority issues/animal welfare” — has garnered any new voters with the comment.

I agree! Over at Salon, Joanna Rothkopf is berating Twitter users for 'horribly" mocking Jenner's coming out. "Horribly" is an understatement. Here's a tweet reported by the New York Daily News soon after Jenner revealed to Diane Sawyer in April when she was still Bruce that she not only votes Republican but goes to church on Sunday:

"Ew Bruce Jenner, I can't believe you'd admit to that way of life," tweeted user @crossenguard. "That's disgusting. I mean…republican?"

Perhaps Jenner's courageous Vanity Fair spread as a face-double for Jessica Lange will finally put paid to that casual conserva-phobia that we toss around so insouciantly–and so microaggressively.
