INDEPENDENT WOMEN'S FORUM RESPONSE TO DONALD TRUMP'S CALL FOR $10 MINIMUM WAGE
Trump's Call for $10 Minimum Wage Would Backfire on Business and American Workers
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Independent Women’s Forum, the leading economic think tank focused on improving women’s prospects without growing government, released the following statement following Donald Trump’s Doral, Florida appearance this this morning. Carrie Lukas, IWF managing director, said:
"As a business man, Donald Trump surely knows that some businesses simply can't afford to pay $10 or more an hour, and as a result of a new federal minimum wage requirement, some will end up having to fire workers. And no surprise, this attitude ignores that making employment more expensive results in fewer jobs—particularly for those with the fewest skills, less education, and who most need those jobs to gain skills and experience that are necessary for future jobs, ones that pay more and start them toward long-term careers.
"Lack of employment, not low wages, is the biggest factor creating hardship today. If Trump wants to help people in need, then his call for a higher minimum-wage should end up on the cutting-room floor before his next speech and he should instead focus on making more jobs available, not making them even more scarce."
