Saudi Arabia, where women are not even allowed to drive cars, has just been elected to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. The Hill reports:

“Electing Saudi Arabia to protect women’s rights is like making an arsonist into the town fire chief,” Hillel Neuer [of UN Watch, a nongovernmental outfit that keeps an eye on the United Nations] said.

Neuer called the election “absurd,” noting that all women in Saudi Arabia “must have a male guardian who makes all critical decisions on her behalf, controlling a woman’s life from her birth until death. Saudi Arabia also bans women from driving cars.”

The election was by secret ballot. According to Fox, Neuer said at least five members of the European Union supported the Saudis bid.

Is this the ultimate sign of western decadence, or what?

It is also yet another sign that the U.S. should give some thought to the level of financial contributions we are making to the U.N.
