IWF Statement on New Steel and Aluminum Tariffs
WASHINGTON, DC — Independent Women's Forum Senior Policy Analyst Patrice Onwuka today released the following statement in response to the announcement from President Donald Trump that the U.S. will impose new tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Europe, Mexico, and Canada:
"It is disappointing that the U.S. is pushing ahead with aluminum and steel tariffs on our closest allies. While we all want to see domestic industries thrive, that should not come at great costs to consumers and risks to American workers and businesses.
"The administration’s intent may have been to strengthen our negotiating position in other important trade discussions, but these tariffs have triggered a host of retaliatory actions that will affect many more industries which employ and serve Americans.
"This administration has made tremendous progress for our national economy by pushing for pro-growth policies such as tax reform and deregulation. Tariffs threaten to undermine that progress and scale back the relief that American businesses and families are enjoying."
