WASHINGTON, D.C. — Independent Women’s Law Center (IWLC) applauds President Donald Trump’s nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett of the United States Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit to the United States Supreme Court. In selecting Barrett—a scholar, judge, and mother—President Trump honors the life and legacy of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a true trailblazer for women in the law.
Jennifer C. Braceras, Director of IWLC, issued the following statement: “Amy Coney Barrett is a brilliant scholar, a fair minded and compassionate jurist, and (like Justice Ginsburg before her) an incredible role model for American women and girls. Her stellar legal credentials combined with her role as mother to seven children give her a unique perspective not currently reflected on the Court. As an organization committed to expanding opportunity for women and girls, as well as to preserving the American constitutional order, Independent Women’s Law Center is thrilled with the nomination of Judge Barrett and agrees that the Senate should move quickly to confirm this unquestionably well-qualified nominee to the highest court in the land.”
Erin Hawley, senior legal fellow at IWLC, said: “By nominating Judge Barrett, President Trump has made good on his promise to appoint judges who will uphold our Constitution as written. Judge Barrett understands that it is the political branches of government, not the courts, who set public policy, and she understands that the role of a judge is to say what the law is, not what it should be. She will make an incredible addition to the Supreme Court.”
If confirmed, Judge Barrett would become the fifth woman to serve on the Supreme Court, the second appointed by a Republican.
