WASHINGTON, DC – Independent Women’s Law Center (IWLC) recently filed an Amicus brief in support of DoorDash in California Superior Court.
In People of the State of California vs. DoorDash, the San Francisco District Attorney seeks an injunction forcing the company to change the classification of its delivery drivers (“Dashers”) from independent contractors to employees pursuant to California Assembly Bill 5 (AB5).
In its friend-of-the-court brief, IWLC explains that an injunction at this stage of litigation would irreparably harm Dashers, many of whom are women who enjoy the flexibility of contract work that allows them to bring others – including family members — – in their vehicles.
Jennifer Braceras, director of the IWLC, said, “In the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, flexible work opportunities are more important than ever. No matter how well-intentioned, AB5 is disastrous policy, and governments should be doing all they can to encourage workforce participation.”
Independent Women’s Forum is highlighting the disastrous consequences of AB5 in its Chasing Work campaign, which tells the real stories of Americans who are being harmed by these job-killing regulations.
