The gig economy has created new opportunities for many women to earn incomes on their schedule. As independent contractors, they can balance caregiving for children, spouses, and aging parents while earning a living or supplementing the family income. According to a survey of female gig economy workers, nearly all of them say that flexibility is important to them. Legislation such as the federal Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act, modeled after California’s devastating Assembly Bill5 (AB5), would eliminate these flexible work opportunities.
