Patrice Onwuka, the Director at the Center for Economic Opportunity at the Independent Women’s Forum, joined Randy Tobler recently to react to changes made in definition of independent contractor vs employee by the Department of Labor under President Joe Biden.
Onwuka says there are between 55 and 57 million workers in the US who do some sort of freelance work. A late Trump administration rule change, changed the definition of independent contractor to a two-factor test. The current department of labor reverted to the 7-factor test previously used.
“What the Biden administration is doing is they are saying; ‘no, independent work, independent contracting should not be the way of the future or the workplace. We want to go back in that traditional 9-to-5 model. We want people to be in a workplace where they are full employees only,” says Onwuka. “It’s not surprising why. It’s easy to unionize employees.”
