The United Federation of Teachers (UFT), the union for education employees in the New York City public school system, quietly criticized Hamas’ October 7th terrorist attack in Israel while maintaining connections to pro-Hamas individuals and organizations. The UFT even harbors a pro-Hamas caucus within the union.
Here is evidence of the UFT’s connections to Hamas supporters:
- A UFT chapter leader, speech teacher Judi Cheng, recently emailed her colleagues, saying that “the last 75 years of genocidal, illegal Israeli colonialist occupation created the horrific, inhumane conditions that led to [the] kidnappings and Hamas’ incursions.”
- The Movement of Rank and File Educators (MORE) is a subsidiary within the UFT that promotes “social justice unionism.” MORE cosponsored a large “Ceasefire Now Rally for Gaza” rally along with the New York Democratic Socialists of America and Jewish Voices for Peace, an anti-Israel organization.
- MORE promotes an “anti-colonialism” curriculum through left-wing organizations such as Teach Palestine. This curriculum focuses on “an understanding of settler colonialism in the US and Palestine, with the goal of helping educators bring Palestine into their classrooms.”
