WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Independent Women’s Forum (IWF) announced that Senior Legal Fellow May Mailman has joined IW full time as Director of Independent Women’s Law Center (IWLC). In her new role, May will work with IWLC founder Jennifer C. Braceras to expand IW’s legal presence. Braceras, who directed IWLC since 2019, becomes IW’s new Vice President for Legal Affairs.
May comes to the Director position with tremendous experience and success. She spent four years as a White House legal advisor to President Donald J. Trump, where she advised on a wide range of policies including health care, immigration, and social issues. More recently, she served as vice president at Restoring Integrity and Trust in Elections (RITE) and as the Deputy Solicitor General for the State of Ohio.
As a senior fellow for IWLC, May wrote extensively on a variety of legal and cultural issues, provided valuable legal advice, and offered testimony before state legislatures and the U.S. House of Representatives. May is lead counsel in Westenbroek v. Kappa Kappa Gamma, a landmark case that seeks to preserve female-only sororities. In December, May filed the sorority women’s opening brief in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit.
As Director of IWLC, May will expand IW’s work to protect single-sex spaces. She will litigate, provide testimony, engage with the media, and advocate for the continued legal relevance of biological sex.
“I have been impressed with the women of IWF since I first met them during my time in the White House, and I have been honored to be part of this organization for the past several years,” said May Mailman. “It has been a pleasure working with Jennifer Braceras, and I look forward to building on the foundation she has laid to protect women’s sports, women’s associations, single-sex housing, and, of course, our right to own gas stoves.”
IWLC founder Jennifer C. Braceras said, “I am thrilled that May has chosen to bring her extensive legal, political, and policy expertise to IWLC on a full time basis. May’s ability to explain complex legal matters in easily digestible terms — not only to judges, but also to legislators, reporters, and lay people — makes her the ideal person to lead the law center in 2024 and beyond. I look forward to working with May as she writes this next chapter for Independent Women’s Law Center.”
As Vice President for Legal Affairs, Braceras will provide strategic legal and legislative guidance and oversee IW’s amicus filings.
“Independent Women’s Law Center has such an important role to play in the fight for limited government, the rule of law, and the protection of the very concept of women as a legally distinct sex,” said Carrie Lukas, president of Independent Women’s Forum. “This expansion of IWLC will broaden our reach and increase our ability to go toe-to-toe with progressive legal organizations. I could not be more excited to welcome May Mailman as IWLC director.“
