WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Independent Women’s Forum (IWF) and Independent Women’s Voice (IWV) call for the immediate removal of Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) Chairman Martin Gruenberg after Gruenberg correctly announced his resignation. In light of last week’s House Financial Services Committee’s hearing and Senate Banking Committee’s hearing featuring disturbing allegations about the workplace culture at the FDIC, partisan delays to replace Gruenberg with new leadership must end.
Patrice Onwuka, director of the Center for Economic Opportunity at IWF, issued the following statement:
“Gruenberg was late to acknowledge problems at the FDIC, late to apologize to the victims of the toxic culture, late to implement reforms, and now doesn’t want to leave. His delay in leaving is a naked attempt to protect a partisan agenda. Women at the FDIC and the American people deserve and demand that he leave without any more delay.”
Carrie Sheffield, senior policy analyst at IWV, added:
“While it was a step in the right direction for Gruenberg to tender his resignation, it appears this is merely a performative gesture as it could take months while he remains in place until his successor. Victims of abuse should not be trapped in an environment with their abuser or those who enable the abuse. Gruenberg must go today, and President Biden must show leadership toward this end. Chairman Brown and all members of Congress must urge Gruenberg to step aside immediately.”

IWF and IWV sent a letter to the Senate Banking Committee and House Financial Services Committee detailing our concerns with FDIC’s culture and banking policies. This letter was entered into congressional record during the hearing by Rep. Ann Wagner. Read it here.
