WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Independent Women announced that Patrice Onwuka, director of the Center for Economic Opportunity at Independent Women, will testify before the House Oversight Committee’s Subcommittee on Health Care and Financial Services on February 11.
The hearing, titled “Examining the Growth of the Welfare State,” will begin at 1:30 p.m. ET on February 11.
In her testimony, Onwuka writes, in part: “For able-bodied individuals who need a hand up, welfare programs should be temporary supports that prioritize helping individuals gain the skills and experience to find gainful employment. Work, training or education, and marriage are all important forces that our welfare system should build up, not undermine.”
Onwuka will address:
- Federal loopholes that create excess welfare program spending;
- Relaxed eligibility requirements for financial assistance;
- Fraud and improper payments within the welfare system; and
- The increased unemployment rate of able-bodied Americans
During her testimony, Onwuka will call upon Congress to:
- Reform eligibility to rightsize federal welfare programs;
- Introduce and fund better tracking systems to find and root out fraud; and
- Encourage pro-employment policies and end the marriage penalty
