WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Senate considered the nomination of Lori Chavez-DeRemer to lead the U.S. Department of Labor. The Senate voted 67 to 32 to confirm her nomination.
Patrice Onwuka, director of the Center for Economic Opportunity (CEO) at Independent Women’s Forum, issued the following statement:
“Our workforce needs a breath of fresh air at the Department of Labor. President Trump is already making good on promises to the American people to cut down the size of government and eliminate waste, fraud and abuse.
“President Trump has also promised to boost our economy. Fighting for the nation’s entrepreneurs and small businesses is key to that. Protecting self-employment and America’s independent workforce must be a top priority for the next DOL secretary. For the past four years, the freedom and flexibility of independent contractors have been jeopardized. A new rule governing independent contracting that was finalized last year places women’s flexible opportunities—from female independent truckers to event planners—at great risk.
“Small and large businesses have also been crushed by labor regulations that increase labor costs and red tape. From overtime rules to attempts to roll back right-to-work laws, the nation’s economic engine has been strangled by an agenda that is hostile to free enterprise.
“Lori Chavez-DeRemer has a chance to right the wrongs of the Biden administration. We expect that as she advances President Trump’s pro-growth, pro-worker, and pro-woman agenda, she will respect the concerns of the self-employed, gig workers, entrepreneurs, and franchise owners and protect their opportunities to pursue their own dreams of independence and the true workplace flexibility that only comes by being your own boss.”
