WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Independent Women unveils poll results highlighting that women, seniors, and overall voters nearly universally say flexibility in their jobs is important to them. The polling, commissioned by Independent Women and conducted by Wick Insights, is a national representative sample of likely 2026 midterm voters.

This polling on independent contractors released during National Small Business Week emphasizes that freedom and flexibility are of top priority for working Americans, especially for seniors, parents, and caregivers.

According to the polling data, eighty-two percent (82%) of women and overall voters, joined by eighty percent (80%) of young voters and seventy-nine percent (79%) of seniors, agree that the government should not force people to work 9-to-5 jobs, but instead allow people the flexibility to be independent contractors.

Patrice Onwuka, director of Independent Women’s Center for Economic Opportunity, said:

Independent contracting is wildly popular. Millions of entrepreneurs, freelancers, and gig workers are earning incomes on their own terms and around their priorities. This polling not only underscores the value Americans place on flexible work, but it illuminates that Americans do not want the government to crack down on their right to work for themselves.

“From Gavin Newsom to Joe Biden, policymakers have sought to restrict independent contracting and force Americans, especially women, into traditional 9-to-5 jobs. Stealing people’s labor choices and freedoms is anti-worker and anti-women. We need Congress and the Trump administration to protect independent work to ensure that Americans can pursue their dreams and carve out meaningful lives.
