WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Independent Women, a leading national women’s organization dedicated to advancing policies that enhance opportunity and well-being, released the following statement praising today’s unanimous decision by the United States Supreme Court to significantly narrow the scope of the National Environmental Policy Act.

Gabriella Hoffman, director of Independent Women’s Center for Energy and Conservation, said:

“Independent Women’s Center for Energy and Conservation applauds today’s unanimous Supreme Court decision limiting the scope of environmental reviews under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). SCOTUS ruled that federal agencies overseeing project approval should only consider direct – not indirect (downstream or upstream) – environmental impacts.

“For too long, government agencies have been ineffective at approving and streamlining new energy infrastructure projects on a case-by-case basis. Red tape, overregulation, and frivolous lawsuits have doomed essential projects to seven to ten years of environmental review—even before new projects are constructed. This is unacceptable.

“Our Center believes today’s ruling will lead to NEPA modernization and more energy infrastructure projects without being a net-negative on the environment.”
