Instead of working to close achievement gaps, many schools justify racial disparities by blaming ‘systemic racism’ and teaching minority students that the deck is stacked against them.

Rather than promoting optimism and resilience, many schools teach minority students that they are victims of an oppressive system, instilling feelings of helplessness.

This is no way to help students succeed.

It’s time to reject Critical Race Theory and rededicate ourselves to the principle of E Pluribus Unum: Out of Many, One.

Myth.

CRT is a graduate-level theory. It is not taught in primary and secondary schools.

The Left likes to claim that CRT opponents are chasing a phantom menace. Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, claims that “critical race theory is not taught in elementary schools or high schools”; Virginia’s former governor Terry McAuliffe disingenuously claims that CRT isn’t taught in Virginia; and NBC News reports that CRT “isn’t happening in classrooms” and that the term has become “an amorphous, catch-all term used by the conservative movement as fodder for political debate.”

Fact.

While CRT originated in elite law schools, many primary and secondary schools routinely implement the work of critical race theorists.

As City Journal’s Christopher Rufo has documented in detail, claims that CRT is not taught in K-12 are demonstrably false. The Virginia Department of Education, for example, calls CRT a “best practice” and has instructed schools to “embrace critical race theory” in order to “re-engineer attitudes and belief systems.” Other school systems may not explicitly endorse CRT but, nevertheless, implement it as part of so-called ‘Anti-Racism,’ ‘cultural competency,’ or ‘equity and inclusion’ initiatives.
