Policymakers should support innovative agricultural practices that help farmers produce more food while using less resources, which is key to eradicating world hunger while still improving the environment.  Innovations such as genetic modification of seeds, agrochemicals, and enhanced equipment are stringently regulated and can be safely used to achieve important environmental and humanitarian goals.  While supporting innovation, the United States should also seek to roll back programs, like the USDA’s farm subsidy program, which needlessly distorts the market, artificially inflates prices, and enriches the politically connected.  Farm subsidies should be a safety net and support farmers who face an unavoidable catastrophe, such as a natural disaster.
