Thomas Jefferson quipped that “a nation that expects to be ignorant and free… expects what never was and never will be.” A good education, encompassing not just the “three Rs,” but civics and the character traits that ensure success later in life, is a fundamental building block for citizenship, and important for the prospect of each individual student and the country as a whole. The goal of our massive public investment in K-12 and higher education should be to provide that opportunity to every child.
