INDEPENDENT WOMEN'S FORUM STATEMENT ON PHILADELPHIA PASSING 1.5 CENT SODA TAX

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Philadelphia City Council passed a 1.5 cent-per-ounce tax on soda and other sugary drinks. The measure was in effort to fund community and education projects and was passed 13-4.  Independent Women's Forum Culture of Alarmism Director Julie Gunlock issued the following statement:

"Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney's meddlesome new soda tax is yet more proof that he cares little about the economic struggles facing many city residents. This tax will hit the poorest Philadelphians the most while doing nothing to lower obesity levels in the city. This is just more bad behavior from a career politician. Instead of cutting wasteful and duplicative government programs or exhibiting a little fiscal restraint, the mayor has decided to impose another burdensome tax on the city's already overtaxed citizenry."
