Abandoning The Clean Power Plan: A Destructive Regulatory Package Fundamentally Bad for American Families and the Economy

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Independent Women’s Forum Senior Policy Analyst Patrice Onwuka released the following statement regarding the announcement that President Trump will undo the Clean Power Plan:

“Repealing the Clean Power Plan is a welcome halt to the expansion of Washington into the energy sector that would have imposed severe costs on American households and vulnerable communities for little or no actual impact on the environment.

“Under President Obama the EPA overreached their statutory authority. They created stringent standards designed to advantage wind and solar energy industries to the detriment of coal and other fossil-fuel industries. Congress never voted on the Clean Power Plan. Instead, a politically-motivated EPA used regulations to pick winners and losers among energy sources. It’s important for the Trump administration to correct this wrong.

“The environmental benefits of the Clean Power Plan would have been minuscule but the costs would have been severe for American families and the economy. It’s great news that this regulatory scheme has been eliminated once and for all.”

IWF released a policy paper on the Clean Power Plan in 2015, detailing the plan, its economic costs, how much the average family would pay in taxes for the plan and how it would especially harm the poor and minority families, why it would have little impact on the climate, and more.
