“I have a recording studio in my home. My agent sends me casting calls to be the voice in a TV, radio or internet ad where I am telling about a product or service. Because I can set my schedule and choose when I want to work and what jobs I want to audition for, I can make some income while being home for my family. No one is forcing me to work as an independent contractor–in fact it’s my choice and my preference. It affords me opportunities I would not otherwise have. Many years ago, actors fought hard to not be employees of the old studio system, and to have a say in what kind of work they do and when. Independent Contractor work might not be for everyone, yet it is essential to those who work creatively. We must retain the right to work on our own terms.”
