“For 35 years, my husband was a Charter Boat Captain. It’s a tourist-driven industry, so in the summer & fall, being an independent contractor meant, if the boat wasn’t booked, he could go shrimping, bait fishing, or sponging, to bring in a little money so my family could pay the bills. If he were forced to be a full-time employee instead, no boat could stay in business because, without trips in summer and fall, the owner couldn’t afford to pay employees, licensing fees, upkeep, repairs, and the constant outflow of money and bills a charter boat incurs.”
