Despite common misconceptions, Title IX isn’t just about college women’s sports. It prohibits discrimination “on the basis of sex” in any aspect of education. The primary text of the original Title IX law that was passed in 1972 states: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation, in be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”
The Biden administration just illegally rewrote Title IX through new administrative rules, expanding the definition of “sex” to include “gender identity.” When the rules go into effect on August 1st, men and boys who self-identify into women’s and girl’s spaces, scholarships, and sports will be protected by Title IX. For information about Title IX and how the Biden administration’s proposed rules threaten privacy, free speech, parental rights, and equal opportunity, check out the IWF Title IX Resource Center.
